1st EUROPEAN SUSTAINABLE TOURISM PRIZE "Carmen Díez de Rivera"

The European Sustainable Tourism Prize was created to reach the following objectives: to promote initiatives that try to implement new management of tourist destinations in accordance with their environmental, social, cultural and economic values, to promote planning of tourist destinations without exceeding the load capacity of the area and proper ways of planning and managing tourist destinations in all of Europe, to establish channels to impulse the generation and improvement of sustainable tourism networks in Europe, to promote the participation of private companies in initiatives that consolidate sustainability of the tourism sector, to promote proper ways to sustain tourism promoted by administrations, private companies and non-profit organizations.

The prize, that after this first edition will be then awarded every two years, was created by the Government of the Balearic Islands together with the Royal Awards Foundation, with the support of the European Environmental Agency, in order to promote a change in tourism management and to plan situations of greater sustainability. It was named Carmen Díez de Rivera because of the values she defended during her life, as she was the spokeswoman for many years on environmental issues in the European Parliament since the early 70’s.
